30 YEARS of SOUND LEISURE!
Jan 2008

Sound Leisure will be celebrating the past as well as looking to the the future at ATEI 2008. Not only will the company be showing the latest phase of its ground-breaking Milestones In Music technology, it will also be marking three historic milestones.

30th Anniversary Of Sound Leisure. Alan Black and Eddie Moss started Sound Leisure in 1978, exhibiting their first jukebox product at the ATEI show at Olympia only 2 years later. Alan, who celebrates 43 years experience in the industry this year, is now joined by his two sons Chris and Michael. The company remains family owned and employs some of the finest craftsmen and technical minds in the leisure industry.
20th Anniversary Of SL Digital Jukeboxes. August 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the world’s first demonstration of a commercial digital jukebox by Sound Leisure. The product, named Nimbus, was initially demonstrated to a group of senior trade executives and press at the Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield and then to a stunned audience at the Novotel Previews at Hammersmith in October 1998. The Nimbus was arguably the catalyst for digital jukeboxes as we know them today.

10TH Anniversary of UK’s first touch screen Video jukebox. In 1998 Sound Leisure went to site with the first Digital Touchscreen jukebox operated in the UK. Developed specifically for Mr Q’s pool venues, the machine was way ahead of its time receiving music updates via satellite and featuring 300 Mpeg Video tracks as standard. This development was the building block for the hugely successful Sound Surfer range of products which continue to operate today on thousands of sites world wide.

Chris Black comments, “Sound Leisure has exhibited at the ATEI every year since 1980 and it remains the highlight of the show calendar for us. Once again, we will be pushing forward the boundaries in jukebox technology with our products but we will also find the time to celebrate our fantastic history with our customers and colleagues.”

Catch us at this years ATEI Show. Earls Court London, 22nd - 24th January.

THE WIZARD OF OZ

Sound Leisure has amazed the customers of the Sailor’s Arms Hotel in Pingrup, Western Australia with the quality and sound of its Digital Nostalgia VVS jukebox.

The juke is the first of its kind to be operated in Australia and was purchased from Sound by its Australian distributor Peter Proposch Electronics (www.digital-jukeboxes.com) who supplied it to John Seman at the Sailor’s Arms.

“I am absolutely delighted with the machine and my customers are really amazed by it. It not only sounds fantastic but the workmanship that has gone into it is really astounding,” commented John. “It’s great to know we have the very first one in the whole of Australia.”

“We are so pleased that John and his customers at the Sailor’s Arms Hotel are happy with their new Nostalgia Jukebox,” says Chris Black, Managing Director of Sound Leisure. “It looks like it will be the first of many we sell into Australia in association with Peter Proposch who is doing a great job on our behalf.”

“The Versatile Video System – or VVS – gives operators the freedom to make video dance to their tune. Want pay-per-play video and audio? That’s no problem with VVS. Or perhaps you want audio and advertising? Or a mixture of both – whatever you want, VVS can deliver. And combine this high-end technology with the traditional British craftsmanship of the Nostalgia cabinet and the result is truly magic!”

Sound Leisure Gets green honour

ELECTRONICS YORKSHIRE HELPS SOUND LEISURE MEET ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVES

Leeds-based Sound Leisure, makers of the world’s ‘ultimate video jukebox’, is the first company to be honoured under a new scheme that helps electronics companies meet increasingly complex requirements to achieve environmentally sound working practices.

The Envirotronix programme, created by Electronics Yorkshire, the region’s electronics industry support organisation, was of immediate relevance to Sound Leisure as they invested in new machinery and processes with the aim of becoming an environmentally responsible manufacturer within 12 months.

Established in 1978, Sound Leisure recently launched their Milestones in Music digital jukebox which carries every top 40 audio track since 1952 and every video featured in the UK top 10 since 1980 – a total of 30,000 audio tracks and 5,000 video selections. Carrying the iconic Top of the Pops branding, the new machine joins a wide range of Sound Leisure jukeboxes including models dedicated to Elvis Presley and The Beatles.

Pete Longley, health and safety manager at Sound Leisure, is responsible for the company’s waste management policy. Having attended the Envirotronix launch and an Electronics Yorkshire seminar on handling hazardous substances and waste, he was keen to pilot the programme.

‘As a major manufacturer in the field of digital leisure and entertainment products we are determined to achieve and maintain best practice and demonstrate compliance with all legislation. Electronics Yorkshire has given us tremendous support in achieving this and we are proud to be the first company in the region to receive the Electronics Yorkshire Envirotronix endorsement.’ he said.

Sound Leisure embarked on the Envirotronix programme in November 2006 and to mark its successful completion they recently received a special plaque from Electronics Yorkshire. A further 24 companies are currently involved in the programme which is being supported by Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency.

Mr Longley has also established an in-house team to constantly review environmental issues relating to the restriction of use of hazardous substances (RoHS) and the disposal of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) legislation. In addition, company policy also requires the recycling of all cardboard, plastic and raw materials as well as some parts from returned jukeboxes.

Much of the company’s output is exported and the Envirotronix programme will help ensure that Sound Leisure meets international as well as UK legislation.

Envirotronix programmes are individually tailored to meet the needs of each participating company. It involves a specialist electronics and environment team from Electronics Yorkshire visiting and working with each company to produce a diagnostic appraisal and recommended action plan.

Electronics Yorkshire provides advice on how best to reach the anticipated goals and companies receive an easy-to-follow management manual or “roadmap to responsible manufacturing.” This introduces a systematic approach to improving existing processes and products and flags-up any modifications a company should make to their enable them to meet current and emerging environmental demands.

Among the many areas covered by the programme are supply chain; disposal; skill levels within the business; batteries; energy-using products (EuP) and use of some chemicals (REACH). The Envirotronix programme also supports practical training courses for individuals and master classes for senior management.

Dave Williams, business development manager at Electronics Yorkshire, said they are delighted with the reception the Envirotronix programme is receiving from the expanding Yorkshire and Humber electronics sector and congratulated Sound Leisure on achieving the award.

‘The Envirotronix programme is proving a great success in helping companies achieve responsible and environmentally aware manufacturing goals. We’re delighted that Sound Leisure has become the first company in the region to achieve the standards of environmental best practice.’

Electronics Yorkshire, based at West Park in Leeds, is a not-for-profit organisation supported by Yorkshire Forward, the Learning and Skills Council and European Union ESF and ERDF.

PREVIEW THE LATEST FROM SOUND

At this years Preview Sound Leisure unveiled the largest range of quality audio and video jukeboxes offered by any manufacturer in the world.

Sound Leisure stand at previews 2007

Topping the bill was Sound Leisure’s Milestones in Music (MIM) digital jukebox housed in the branded Top of the Pops cabinet and endorsed by the “Official UK Top 40 Company. It features every Top 40 chart hit since 1952. Milestones in Music digital holds in excess of 30,000 tracks internally, without the need for a broadband connection, but can still be fully profiled to suite a site’s requirements.

The fact it offers a huge selection of music is not the full story, its appeal to many locations is down to the unmatched search facility that allows customers to type in ANY date from 1960 onwards and view that week’s Top 40! MIM has shown an average increase in cashbox over existing digital jukeboxes of between 40-60% - even during one of the most difficult trading conditions over the summer.

Another addition to the Sound Leisure range that made its first appearance was the addition of a budget video jukebox, Digitracks which features 1000 profiled WM9 videos, previously only available on the top of the range Browser and Music Express models. The Digitracks video offer incorporates modern styling and the 1000-video starter pack at a budget price.

Existing customers buying a new video jukebox during the show can benefit from a “Double Discount” as Sound net will slash the price of the fortnightly video update on every new jukebox, matching that reduction on an old subscription – one new for one old.

Preview has always been a very important show for Sound Leisure, especially this year as we are riding on a big high due to the performance of the Milestones In Music over the recent summer period, In the twenty years that I have been involved with operating and manufacturing Jukeboxes I have never witnessed income like this machine is generating  ” comments Managing Director Chris Black. “This summer Paul Valente from Kent-based Quality Amusements reported a 60% increase in cash taken over his original Digital boxes with Milestones in Music.

As well as Paul's machines here are what some of our other customers are saying about the Sound Leisure Milestones In Music Top Of The Pops branded jukebox.

“The Milestones in Music is the best thing to happen to the jukebox industry for a long time. The increase in revenue has been outstanding!
Scott McGillivray
Sims Automatics

“Everyone involved with the development of this product deserves a pat on the back, It’s superb.”
Alan Cook
Leisure Time, Lancashire

“Since Installing the Milestones in Music machines my profits have risen an amazing 60%... This was over a summer period!”
Paul Valente : Director
Quality Amusements

“We have placed MIM machines on various locations where alternative digital boxes had previously been sited. These sites have reported a considerable uptake in profit.”
Bill Simmonds :
F.Simmonds & Sons, Weymouth

“We sited our first Milestones in Music machine 6 weeks ago. The site had previously housed a Music On Line. The MIM has DOUBLED the cash taken by the previous box.”
Steve Sutherland : Director
Foremost Leisure

"The Top of the Pops Milestone in Music Digital Juke Box is one of only a few products which have returned impressive figures during a period of tough trading. The pure fact that it offers a huge selection of music with a well known brand name is paramount in its appeal to many locations and as a company we will definitely continue to invest in Sound Leisure's best Digital Juke Box to date."
Jason Jarrett : Director
Automatic Machine Services Limited

SL Provide England World Cup Teams Soundtrack!

Thanks to Sound Leisure the England football team has LOADS of music to get them in the mood to win! Sound Leisure was asked to provide a jukebox for the players own relaxation area at the England Team's hotel in Germany.

The relaxation area is the ultimate playroom with pinball machines, video games and even a golf simulator helping the players to relax when they are not on the pitch. Of course no games room would be complete without a kicking jukebox. The VVS Music Express digital jukebox SL have provided contains all the latest chart releases as well as all the best music from recent decades!

What’s really interesting is viewing the "most played" section of the jukebox as it shows just what the players have been listening to whilst chilling out in the games room.

It seems a really mixed selection with, but the top track so far is:

1. LL Cool J and J Lo – control myself

With the rest of the top 5 consisting of:

2: I’m sprung : T Pain

3: Take me out : Franz Ferdinand

4: Swing low 03 : UB40

5:Fun Lovin Criminals : F L C

So now we know what the likes of Beckham, Crouch and Rooney are listening to. We’ll update the list when competition's over and hopefully we’ll see selections such as Queen, We Are the Champions and The Bee Gees, So You Win Again flying up the top 10!

Sound Leisure and DT Break World Record at ATEI
Source: Coinslot

DT Productions and Sound Leisure have launched the world's largest hard drive-based jukebox - preinstalled with the entire Top 40 since 1952 and thousands more essential tracks from every Soundnet category.

Sound Leisure's Milestones in Music jukebox revolutionises digital delivery - as it does away with the need for a broadband connection on site. The Official Chart Package from DT Productions/Soundnet, which comprises of around 30,000 chart and profiled hits is pre loaded onto the machine before delivery

Soundnet/DT Productions have negotiated a groundbreaking licence that gives Sound Leisure access to all this content and permission to store it locally on the jukebox hard drive. They have also invested countless man-hours in profiling every single track to Sound Leisure's specification, allowing full profiling of 'Milestones in Music' systems.

Chairman of the Independent Operators Association, John Powell was highly impressed by the capabilities of Milestones in Music and The Official Chart Package during the show. He said, "The requirement for a broadband connection on some digital jukeboxes can cause problems for operators due to the fast turnover of licensees. This product not only does away with this headache, it also provides a huge database of tracks for customers to choose from."

The entire Top 40 consists of just over 18,000 tracks, and is also preinstalled with an extra 7,000 essential tracks. The jukebox selection is kept fresh following installation, with an update every two weeks of the official chart plus over 100 new category tracks delivered every month by disc.

"The Official Chart Package is an industry first," said DT's Simon Davis. "No other jukebox has ever stored up to 30,000 tracks on its hard-drive. When you combine this with 50 years of chart hits and Top of the Pops branding, we believe this is the package UK operators have been waiting for."

"Milestones In Music offers new search features that enable users to see the official Top 40 for any date entered into the jukebox since the first official UK chart. It is also possible to view the Top 40 at the time of recent historic events such as England's 1966 World Cup victory, or the day man first walked on the Moon!" said Sound Leisure's Chris Black. "And for those with a broadband connection, the jukebox is also on-line compatible to receive the new charts as they are released every Monday".

Another ATEI Success for SoundLeisure!

We are pleased to report another fantastic ATEI show this year. The Sound Leisure stand was, again, busy all week with enquiries about our full range of digital jukeboxes and especially the NEW Top of the Pops - Milestones in Music Digital Jukebox. The feedback was amazing - Everyone loved the ability to search from every single chart release since 1960, entering dates of birth, wedding anniversaries and other notible dates and all were amazed that we could offer this without the necessity of a broadband connection!

We will be on the road over the next couple of months, following up enquiries and offering further demonstrations of the Milestones in Music technology. If you would like to arrange a demonstration, please contact us by clicking here.

As with all Sound Leisure jukeboxes tracks can be located by genre, track name, or artist. 'Milestones In Music' also offers new search features that enable users to see the official Top 40 for ANY date entered into the jukebox since the first official UK chart (such as Date Of Birth, Wedding Anniversary etc) or view the Top 40 at the time of recent historic events such as England's 1966 World Cup victory, the fall of the Berlin Wall or the day man first walked on the Moon etc.

The Micro Music addresses Another issue facing operators of Modern Digital Jukeboxes. The cost of remote selectors.

Sound Leisure has addressed this issue with the development of the 'Micro Music' digital remote selector. This masterpiece of miniaturisation can be connected to any of the products in Sound Leisure's range of Digital Audio machines.

Due to its small external dimensions it offers the potential to install the Micro Music close to the largest flow of customers. This unit is a must for sites requiring additional music selection points remote to the main jukebox location.

We can't wait to see you reaction to our new products and look forward to seeing you at this years ATEI.

SOUND LEISURE RAISES ITS PROFILE AT ATEI

Sound Leisure is pushing forward the boundaries of digital music delivery still further at ATEI 2005 with a number of systems and innovations that will allow operators to maximise the potential of their digital jukeboxes. After three years of leading the field with digital music upgrades via CD ROM, Sound Leisure will unveil its online system at this year’s show. The online system allows operators direct access to the Jukebox server – meaning they can download tracks on a daily basis if necessary. In addition, settings such as timers and price of play can be changed at the press of a button. “This online system is the logical development from the CD ROM updates for some of our customers,” says Managing Director Chris Black. “However, as our CD ROMs feature pre-release music, those who wish to continue with CD ROM delivery will still have all the latest tracks. The great thing is that all our digital jukeboxes are fully upgradeable, so operators can change over at any time.” Flexibility is also the key when it comes to profiling the music on the boxes to suit individual venues. Unlike some jukeboxes, which can overwhelm the customer with millions of tracks – Sound Leisure’s boxes are all individually profiled with specific customer needs and they continue to profile themselves without ongoing operator involvement. The IMMS – Intelligent Music Management System – currently works with the CD ROM system and will be available On Line also. Each time a music update is available to the Jukebox, it is scanned and those tracks that are similar to those previously most played are actually downloaded onto the system.

At this year’s ATEI, Sound Leisure will also be demonstrating another profiling breakthrough. The Rapid Profiling System – or RPS – means that a new jukebox can be profiled after is has left the factory, in as little as five minutes! Operators will now be able to keep jukeboxes in stock and once they are put on site, they can ascertain the venue profile – contact Soundnet and in return they will be sent an email with a code. Once the code is entered into the box, it will automatically adjust itself so as to display the type of music most requested in that site. “Even if you move a jukebox from one site to another, it doesn’t matter. In five minutes you can go from Irish music to Glam rock – and the jukebox will work to maximum revenue right away,” said Chris Black. Sound Leisure will also be showing its Audio/Video Combination for the first time in London. “All jukeboxes we build from now on will allow both audio and video. And no matter if an operator only wants audio to start with – he can upgrade to video at any later stage. We really mean it when we say we offer the Complete Digital Solution!” said Chris Black. Finally Sound Leisure and D.T. productions will unveil their Top of the Pops branded offer. This ground-breaking UK chart show is one of the biggest licences in the music industry and following intensive negotiations by DT Productions, Sound Leisure have signed an exclusive deal to use it on their products
